What is a Legal Document Preparer?
A Legal Document Preparer, or Legal Document Assistant (LDA), is an experienced professional with education, training, or work experience who prepares legal documents at the direction of clients and supports the public in legal matters. Legal Document Preparers may have paralegal experience and/or a paralegal certification but cannot refer to themselves as paralegals unless working under the supervision of an attorney. LDAs and Paralegals do not provide legal advice or representation in court.
We assist consumers with legal information by locating and providing them with laws, cases, and court rules.
Many individuals encounter issues due to lack of knowledge or information about their case. A legal document preparer can explain rules and procedures so that the consumer knows what to do next, or what to expect next.
Legal forms can be complicated and often present a frustrating task for clients. Our legal document preparers help clients prepare, complete, and file the proper documents.
While many consumers may be able to fill out forms themselves, they may not be aware of specific formatting requirements such as fonts, font size, margins, etc.
Legal document preparers actively listen to their clients. Asking questions that help the client arrive at their own decisions or acting as a sounding board may be the most valuable aspects of hiring a legal document preparer.
Since consumers are only paying document the preparers for limited nonlawyer services, the feesdocument preparers charge are much lower than an attorney might charge for similar document preparation services.
Legal Document Preparer vs. Attorney

Attorneys play a more direct role in interacting with both clients and the court. An attorney is responsible for initiating the client-attorney relationship as well as providing legal advice and in-court representation. Once the paralegal has prepared all documents and court appearances have been scheduled, the attorney facilitates all proceedings.
